James Felton Atkins, Sr., affectionately known as “Jimmy,” departed this life on August 22, 2026, at the age of 71. Born in Independence, Louisiana, James was raised in Greensburg, Louisiana, where he graduated from Greensburg High School. He later continued his education at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he studied welding.

A gifted athlete, James played football at both Greensburg High School and Southwest Mississippi Community College. He also enjoyed softball and tennis and was an excellent swimmer.

James built a career spanning more than 40 years as a Fabricator Shop Technician, with welding among the many skills he mastered. He dedicated many years of service to MRC Global, where he was known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and hands-on knowledge.

Jimmy loved hunting, fishing, music, the outdoors, working with his hands, and spending time with family. He was hardworking, outspoken, straightforward, and always true to himself.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted life companion, Artiela Young; his children, LaChandra Atkins, Keith Ross, Cherotamekia Morris (Vernon), James Atkins, Jr., Takeira Benoit (David), Tar'leshia Atkins, and Tia Atkins; his grandchildren, siblings, brother-in-law, godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and coworkers.

Viewing will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, GFL Cathedral, 8930 Plank Rd., Baton Rouge, La 70811 at 9:30 am until the religious service at 11 am. Elder Kenneth McKnight will be officiating the service. Interment will be in Turner Chapel Cemetery.
