Sadie Bernice Knighten

On Friday, August 19, 2022, Sadie Bernice Knighten, loving sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt entered eternal rest at the age of 89. Sadie was born on March 20, 1933 in Greensburg, Louisiana to the late Westley Butler and the late Janie T. Butler. She was the only daughter of four children. She was the devoted mother of the late Melvin Knighten. Sadie also assisted in rearing her younger brother, Truman. At 18 years old, Sadie moved to New Orleans to begin a career at Ochsner Foundation Hospital.  Sadie started as a Housekeeper and progressed to Anesthesia Technician.  Sadie was known for her dedication and work ethic. She was known to go above and beyond her regular duties. She retired after 39 years of service to return to Greensburg to care for her mother. Sadie has been a faithful member of Payne Memorial AME Church in New Orleans since July 18, 1950. She served on the Usher Board and the Pastors Aide Club for over 50 years. She was a Bonus Mother to her niece, Ingra. She was a loving grandmother to her grandsons Melvin and Brysen. Sadie was known for her loving spirit and beautiful smile. She was a true Christian and her love for Jesus was shown in her willingness to help and love everyone she encountered. Sadie's resilience was exhibited throughout her life.  Her love and dedication to God and family was top priority.  Upon the death of her mother, she returned to New Orleans and began a career at St John Berchmans’ Manor. Sadie is survived by her brother, Truman Butler, Sr (Mary Ann); Daughter-In-Law Sharon Knighten; Niece Ingra Butler-DeVore (Rian); Grandsons Melvin Smith (Erica) and Brysen Smith; 5 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.  Relatives and Friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Payne Memorial AME Church 3306 South Liberty NOLA. at 9:30am on Saturday, September 10. 2022 with visitation beginning at 8 am until service begins. Burial Service at Pipkins Chapel AME Church 266 Chapel Road Chipola, LA 70441. MJR Friendly Service Funeral Home has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
