Ecclesiastes 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
Velma “Honey” Hurst was born August 13, 1934, the second of eleven children born to Fred and Georgia Mae Hurst in Greensburg, LA. At the age of 88 years, she transitioned November 13, 2022 while in the care of her daughter in Baton Rouge, LA.
Upon learning that she would be a grandmother, Velma decided that her grandchildren should call her something that reflected the richness of her love and the sweetness of her spirit; thus, she became “Honey” to Brian, Craig, and Kelly and eventually “Honey” to all their friends, their families, and all who met her as well.
Velma taught high school social studies and civics in St. Helena and Orleans Parish Schools. She retired as a high school guidance counselor from Orleans Parish Schools.
Velma (Honey) leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Pamela Carl Metoyer, Baton Rouge; her grandchildren, Christopher Brian Morgan (Dana), Baton Rouge; Craig Morgan, Baton Rouge; and Kelly Morgan Gunn (C.J.) Atlanta, GA, along with great-grandchildren: Christopher, Kennedy, Bryson, Madison, Grant, Blake, River, Tre, and Camden; one great-great grandson Marz Blaze; siblings: Alcee (Viola), Fred Jr, Thomas Jahue (Shirley), Walter (Ann), Ora, Hollis, Marshall; sisters-in-law: Brenda, Hazel; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ethel Dunn, and brothers Mack, Lawrence, and Melvin Hurst.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Kindezi Schools (kindezi.org/support-us/) in loving memory of Velma Hurst (Grandmother of Dr. Kelly Morgan Gunn).
